It is the aim of the Tafel-societies to rescue and deliver good, edible food, which cannot be sold on the market anymore, to people in need.

The Tafel-societies rescue excess food which, according to the legal requirements, is still good and edible and give it to people in need.

Guidance

The Tafel-societies may also provide other basic necessities.
However, the focus must be on rescuing and giving out food.
Food or other items are given out free or against payment of a small symbolic sum, e.g. one coin per household and ration given out.
Whether or not a person is in need of assistance is determined in accordance with the principles of ¤ 53 of the German tax code and in consideration of local circumstances and is determined individually by each Tafel-society.
Food is handed out in accordance with the regulations on food hygiene (Lebensmittelhygieneverordnung LMHV) as well as in accordance with the act on protection against infectious diseases (Infektionsschutzgesetz).
