The Berliner Tafel e.V. delivers food exclusively to charities and community programmes in Berlin. Among them are homeless shelters, soup kitchens, women's refuges, juveniles' refuges etc.

All these organisations offer help to the roughly 500,000 people in this city who need it. These people live on job seekers allowance (ALG 2), on small pensions or on other forms of welfare. Children suffer particularly badly. Their parents' poverty automatically affects them too.

In the light of continuous reductions in funding from the municipal or the city's administrative bodies, many of these over 400 community food programmes are often only able to continue offering food with the help of the Berliner Tafel e.V. While some organisations used to be limited to offering soup, they can now sometimes also offer fruit, cake, meat and dairy products, food that is beyond their limited budgets otherwise.
